Those are Roll In T Nuts. Not sure they will work in aluminium, but now you have a description.

Thanks, Barry. I’ll poke around and see what I can find. It does help immensely when knows what something called! We’ve got a great hardware store a good bike ride away with all sorts of fasteners. Now knowing they are a thing with a name maybe I can find something there.
