Don't know how far it is from your base, but you can do it unsupported without any problems. There's shop in Borg d' Osians (sp?) and Huez so food and water won't be an issue. You can ride back down the hairpins, or make a loop down the backside and back to Osains. Give yourself 4 hours for the round trip, shopping, Etc.
