My birthday is coming up, but I’ll be working so decided to get the birthday miles in today. Set out on what I thought would be 50-55 miles (looking for 53} and it turned out to be a hard 66 miles. I rode from just outside the town of Crozet north along the shoulder of the Blue Ridge. I went up the climb on Simmons Gap road to Skyline drive, back south and descended through Rockfish Gap back to my start. Very muggy day , but cloudy and threatened rain, so temps weren’t too bad, especially up on the mountain. Thought for sure I’d get wet today, but only rain was about 2 minutes to cool me off at mile 53. Thanks for the birthday present weather gods! I thought the birthday trick today would be 5300 feet of climbing, but the last bit in the final picture below put me at 5400 for the day. My wife and youngest met me at the peach orchard at the finish for a peach milk shake.

My task for the day is to get up there

For those of you who know Simmons Gap Rd, I approached from the other direction, which meant a stiff paved climb followed by direct descent to the real climb.

Doc Cannondale Memeorial Rest Stop

Skyline Drive looking southwest

Home stretch I only had to climb a little bit of that before downhill rest of the way home
