We live in a development built just after the war, typical California postwar ranch house. When we moved in, it had thick carpeting all over. Then the cats we had started a pee battle. After months of desperately trying to wash the smell out of carpets and pads - which doesn't work - Mrs. GeneJockey had had enough. The cats had chosen the foyer as their spot. She pulled up the carpet there. Turns out the place has oak floors through out.
Hardwood floors >>> carpeting.
