Here's the amount of effort I need to go somewhere with my bike:
- hitch on my car
- 50lb hitch rack (or more)
- storing a large and heavy hitch rack
- taking it on and off the car which requires a tool and again, it's 50lbs

Here's the amount of effort I need for a folding bike:
- fold it
- pick it up and put it in the trunk
- the bike is 50lbs as well but I don't have to attach it to a part on the car I just put it in the trunk

For others it's simple the novelty factor - it's new, it looks cool, they want to have it to saitate their novelty seeking.
