When I first rode a bike as an adult around 1983, I think, it was on an old 3 speed that my landlord left in the ivy for a few years. I rode that thing for 6 months and that was the last time I rode any bike on flats.

I don't know if I will like it but I feel like I could deal with technical stuff better if I could take a foot off or twist more. OTOH it would suck to buy a pair of Five Tens and some flats and not be happy with it.
