During my career as an RN, I cared for many shingles patients. It can be thoroughly miserable, sometimes requiring hospitalization and intravenous pain killers. And it can leave you with permanent nerve damage, chronic neuralgias, or even deafness or blindness if the optic or auditory nerves are involved.
