Regarding clamping the top tube, it's not just the static force of the clamp that can damage the frame. No matter how lightly the tube is clamped, if anything hits or knocks the bike while in the stand it can get damaged by the clamp. It doesn't take a hard knock at the rear wheel for example to translate into a lot force at the clamp.
