Daughter has a five or year old Synapse with a mix of Tiagra components also. But from the get-go, we never could get the tektro brakes working properly. Finally after having a buddy of mine, who used to be a team mechanic for a few tour de france teams, take a look at it, we both gave up and upgraded the brakes to 105. Now it's smooth as silk. Except for the FSA crankset. But don't get me started on that.
