I had a 1992 ? Trek 820 that I used for touring for several years but it came with a non-shock hard tail fork to begin with. It seems to me, you have the fork, why not just slip it in place and see how you like it. Is there that much difference if your shock fork is locked out vs the cro moly fork? I say go for it.
