Yes, shrinkage could be quite significant depending on the the individual’s level of activities (or it’s lack). Losing an inch or so is common even with keeping relatively fit.
If you you routinely engage in exercising, stretching and strengthening your back muscles that support your back bone, you will fare better - think of it as load-sharing scheme where you are actively engaging your muscles to help.
