Completely unrelated to the bike... you might consider buying and installing a few inches of
3M chip guard on your car's trunk to protect the paint from damage caused by the rack straps. The blue painter's tape won't do much if a strap comes loose and starts vibrating while you're driving. The 3M stuff is incredibly tough and well worth the couple of bucks.
