It's not quite that bad, but getting the last spring in the correct place can require a lot of patience. I did it once. That was enough for me.
If you're not hung up on the whole sustainability thing, a much easier solution for not much more money is to replace the entire shift assembly. You can get a 10-speed Record-level shift assembly for about $100. Then you just swap over your hood, clamp, and brake blade. I'm pretty sure you could handle it yourself, but if you don't want to I know a guy in Beaverton (me) who would do it for you the next time you're in the area. I hear @
