Get the RoadID app. Your wife and others don't need to install the app. They just get a text with a link, which when opened (and reopened etc).. shows breadcrumbs on a map of where your are and have been. The only downside is you tend to get some goofy emails congratulating you on your super-fast ride after you complete your ride.

I like reading the goofy post-ride e-mails; they are fun to read.
This is a good system; only downside is cellphone battery consumption.
