Today I see that the US government is discussing their role in such a passport, no decisions yet but the topic is being looked at. A good article on some of the issues here, non-paywall:

I am not taking any position on this or trying to start a debate, I am only passing on information from some news sources on this topic.
I was tempted to start a new thread on this, but I think it is too early for that, as there are lots of things being discussed but no real information yet on what travelers will need to know. Once some information comes out that travelers should know, I think a new thread on this topic would be warranted.
