I forget the exact quote that went viral, but it was supposedly sincere and read something like this: "As an English teacher, I can tell you that if a person says that 'they' is ever used as a singular pronoun, they are wrong." Supposedly, the writer didn't notice the irony.
We use "they" as singular all the time, the awkward part is the linking verb ("is" vs. "are"). We is open to suggestion, but I don't think ridiculing people for using " they" is a good solution.
For whatever humorless pedants might be reading this, please don't bother correcting me for the "We is".
