My last idea here is simply use a different 12v power source. You could either get a small gel cell and then charge that up at home, or a battery case that holds 8 to 10 AA NiMH batteries in series (10 is probably better than 8). And then charge up the AA at home. If you go the AA route, all of the AA batteries should be identical since the lowest capacity battery is in the box is the battery that will determine your battery lifespan.
