Also, on a muddy ride the chainsuck is terrible.

I recall chainsuck issues - too common

I've been checking out off road bikes recently when I see them in parking lots, etc - many if not most had 1x drivetrains

one LBS near me has converted most of the bikes they maintain for a local school district to 1x drivetrains (advanced PE has MTB units)
