I wouldn't buy them, but I have had to replace spd's. When you run in them a lot because you're not good enough to hop barriers. You may have to run concrete stairs in practice or a race........it will wear down a cleat however recessed or not it is. If it's too recessed, it will make it too tough to constantly re-engage the cleat/pedal.

But that's maybe once every like 3 years or so? Given that, I wouldn't buy it unless I was making like 3x what I make in a year then it would become irrelevant as a cost.
