I guess it depends on what your expectations for the race are. You could twist an ankle, or trip and fall and tear a rotator cuff bracing yourself...and be completely out of the race. But accidents aside...I wouldn't think the hiking-noncycling would be detrimental. If you feel like it will...do some lunges and squats frequently as you hike along.
