Why are you riding in freezing rain? That just seems sadistic, silly and dangerous. There are times not to ride and if your ride requires taking a full wheelset (which would have to include a spare cassette or freewheel) probably not a ride I would want to be on unless I was a professional pro tour cyclist which nobody here is..

If you are really worried about flats, I would look into getting some really puncture resistant tires and looking at the Tannus Armor inserts and make sure your tires are properly inflated before riding. But again I probably just wouldn't be riding in the freezing rain at least not intentionally.

Would love to see the Vitus, it would be a good post for the Classic and Vintage section. Not modern weight weenie-ism but a cool vintage bike.
