With a vertical kingpin, apply the brakes, and it turns the wheel hard to the side where the brake was applied.
With an inclined kingping (pointing approximately to the center of the wheel), apply the brakes, and the steering doesn't pull.
A linked brake system will help. But say you break one brake cable, then the bike becomes dangerous to ride. And if the fault occurs unexpectedly, then rider reactions are hard to predict, and it could cause a crash.
