cxwrench and others have noted, mileage (rather than chronological age) is the key variable. Since I'm more into riding bikes than collecting them, my most ridden bikes get more miles
per year than your bikes have gotten
ever. Hence the yearly (or more frequent) cable replacement.
Garage queens don't need much maintenance.
