If you do want to make a stiffener I can suggest two materials that have worked for me.

a plastic pot from the nursery that was used for a live tree, around 12" tall. They seem like ABS plastic. The black plastic sides can make good stiffeners if your design is small enough. Cut away the top rim and the bottom then cut the rest in half, front and back. Flatten it out under a board for a while then cut to size.

another material is the large translucent white "bottles" that kitty litter comes in. My wife gets a 20lbs size, about 12" tall. Again cut away top and bottom and the sides are useful. Stiff enough to hold sharpe but flexible.
