Years ago, I encountered a chronically ill patient who had become intensely dependent on diphenhydramine (Benadryl) after receiving with many infusions of some blood product. She became quite obstreperous when it was withheld, but I couldn't see the harm in it given what her life was like. Her doctors and the consulting shrink disagreed.
When my Grandmother was 97, the new doctor in the Mennonite Home decided to take her off some drug she was on because 'she wasn't as active as he'd like'. When Mom told me that I wondered how active was she supposed to be given most people her age have been dead for 20 years.
