We do sometimes need to raise the seat to get enough post to clamp in the workstand. I always mark a post, before moving it. Occasionally, a mechanic forgets to reset a post.
If I have to raise a post to give me enough room to clamp I like to turn the post at least 30 degrees so there's a visual reminder that I need to reset it when I'm done.
