This is a Bridgestone Eurasia ES-1 bicycle from the early 1980s that has been completely restored. The Eurasia was only available in Japan, and was designed as a sport touring / gravel bike. It is made from 4130 chromoly steel and has 700c wheels with clearance for wide tires. It’s not a lightweight frame, but the materials and frame geometry yield a plush, stable ride that keeps you comfortable across many hours and miles in the saddle. The ES-1 supports multiple rack configurations via attachment points on the fork and drop-outs. Perhaps the most distinctive feature is the direct-mount center-pull brake calipers. They provide vastly better braking power and response than typical bolt-on styles. It is also factory-drilled for internal wiring in case you want to add a rim or hub generator and lights. Today, these kinds of features are very rare outside of hand-made custom bikes. I imported this one from Japan and completed restored it. I started with a fresh powder coat of gloss blue and built it with the following components, many of which are original to the bicycle:
- Chrome Bridgestone headset
- Sugino Maxy crank set: 52/44 teeth, 165mm
- Sugino bottom bracket
- New-old-stock Dia-Compe 610 brake set (brand new calipers, brake levers, cables, pads and hoods)
- Dia-Compe 90mm stem with copper bell
- NITTO handlebars with shellacked cork tape & Rivendell-style twine finish.
- Front rack with removeable LED flashlight
- Suntour VX rear derailleur, front derailleur, and shifters
- Suntour 5-speed freewheel & new chain & new shifter cables
- MKS AR-1 pedal set with toe clips & straps
- Original Araya 700c wheelset with Shimano hubs & Suntour QR skewers.
- New 700x28c Michelin Dynamic classic skin wall tires, new inner tubes
- SR Custom-P3 seat post
- Brooks Professional saddle with copper rivets
- Velo Orange aluminum fenders with hammered finish
