I think that has changed in recent years. I have that distinct memory too. An oldster on another forum recently had hip surgery and was back home a couple days later. He's still not doing stairs, a couple weeks later, but he's recovered.
Well mine was terrible at 39, so I can see it being hard on the elderly.
One of my mother's friend's husband had a much worse one though - he's 90 and had to have hardware from the previous fix removed for a hip replacement. He can walk the dogs several blocks now (albeit two years later).
Surgery has come a long way.
