Depends on the smart trainer. My wheel-on Wahoo Kickr Snap required an adapter, which goes on the clamp side, and that comes with 3 different thru axles. These are longer than normal TAs, with an extension that goes into a socket on the adapter. To me, it feels more solid than using a bike with a QR.
