One of my favorite places, between the months of May and October that is.
The Byway is part of the Great Divide route that was paved in 2008. The last two times I rode it I saw participants in the race. From Wise River I head east then south to Melrose. From there, you can take a paved road to Dillon or tackle a really cool, 25 mile dirt road that takes you to Twin Bridges, but you need the right equipment. I’ve pushed the envelope three times riding my LHT with 37c tires. Tough going on the stretches that are hill, bumpy and somewhat rocky. But nice scenery and nearly total solitude. Greatest number of vehicles I encountered was 4. Far more free range cattle.

Notice my front rack is crooked in the third photo, which was taken after we got back on pavement. I had lost a bolt thanks to the bumps. Didn't notice until camp, which was only a mile or so away.
