40 miles RT is a stretch under many if not most circumstances. I had a 42 mile RT commute I did for a while using public transportation. Not working set hours, my commute was 3 to 5 hours a day depending on time of day, and day of the week. That's not practical, or realistic for most people.
I didn't consider cycling an option as I was working as a mover at that time.
