It might not work for someone in a mountainous environment, but it works great in the Bay Area. Maybe the DC/Boston corridor needs to work on their bike infrastructure? If you don't build it, they won't come (they will just keep driving).
I have a Bikes At Work utility trailer with 350lb capacity. And where I live is flat with a few bridges. A third chain ring is mandatory.
