I live on Long Island, home of the 112# mommy in a 6000# SUV.
I have the lights on my bike but generally don't have them on.
I can easily turn on the front and or rear while riding if conditions like deep shadows or very low sun angle deem it needed. There's been many early mornings that i'm riding on a quiet road and the sun is not above the trees and a car coming around a turn won't see me until they are on top of me. During the January the sun is very low in the southern sky and heading north i'm blind to a car coming from a cross street and looking south.
Having the lights available means I don't always have to assume they don't see me.
I'll take the weight penalty for the added safety as needed.
