How about the Ford C-Max? You can get it in a hybrid for high mpg. Even a plug-in version to really go green and get the HOV lane. Not sure if it's big enough inside, though.
I looked at one of those. Thought it was bigger and more comfortable than a Prius.
Didn't test drive it. Pretty sure the tandem would not fit inside and like many vehicles these days the top is roof rack challenged.
Pretty sure at this point I am going with 2010 Sienna.
