It is the shortest daylight period but sunset started getting later around here on December 6 and sunrise won’t be the latest until around January 5. It’s a consequence of the elliptical orbit of the Earth and the solstice being near the closer part of the ellipse. This produces higher angular velocity around the Sun and tweaks the sunrise and sunset times a bit.
