Same here. I was on a solo ride earlier this year and the battery in the Varia died. That was my cue that it was time to go home even though I had not completed my planned ride. It's a game changer for me, especially since I have partial left side hearing loss and have difficulty hearing traffic approaching from the rear.
I decided to do one of the monthly C&V rides with no bells and whistles on the handlebar, so I left the Garmin and the Varia off the bike. I confess I felt pretty naked, especially on one particular freeway interchange where cyclists have to cross over from the right hand side of the road to the middle on a 40 mph limit road.
