I have mine off for the same reason. I really don't care much about average speed at all. I only watch power data and HR too. I watch my zones, speed is not a good measuring tool for me. Now if I were a TT or on another type training then I can see the need.
My Garmin when I upload shows overall time and moving data so that is good enough.
I honestly don't think there is a wrong answer here.
