I was not on the ride. My friends saw the aftermath likely a few minutes after the crash. It happened along the route. I know the rider was struck by a pickup, but unclear if he crashed and then hit by pickup (sounds plausible) or if pickup clipped rider and caused the crash.

Either way, it’s a tragedy for the rider and his family.

My friends did say that, as is typical, cyclists of all abilities were on the road and were misbehaving, riding 5 abreast, sometimes crossing the center line, etc., if you have ever done an organized big ride like a charity ride you know this. That danger factor is why I avoid large, mass-start events and choose to do small group rides with 4-10 friends who I know and trust to ride as safely as possible. I was invited and even encouraged to do the mass start century yesterday but chose to skip it.
