This is my dad’s watch. He was on the USS Yorktown at the Battle of Midway. His bomber squadron flew an earlier mission and he was aboard ship when it was attacked. I wish I knew more details but IIRC, air crew were dealing with explosions and fires on the hangar deck after the first attack wave when he broke his watch. The hands haven’t moved since then. It’s about the only possession he had when rescued by a destroyer after the order came to abandon ship. He saw more history in his early 20s than I’ll ever see but I was lucky enough to attend one his bomber squadron reunions and meet some of his shipmates before he passed away.




From what I can gather, I believe this torpedo hit happened about 10 or 15 minutes after he broke his watch.
