Back in the 70s, while hitch hiking west on Route 66, we passed a small plane that had recently landed on the highway. Route 66 was, surprisingly, a two lane road, with wide shoulders. The single lane, both ways, was the passing lane, and the shoulder was the slow lane. In those days before radar, the guy riding shotgun had binoculars to spot cops in the distance. v
