I eventually figured out the problem - there's a reflector on the flywheel. That is there's SUPPOSED to be. I found it on the floor. It wasn't doing much good there. Eventually I figured out how to open up the cover to replace it. But apparently this is very common. The flywheel heats up, the glue degrades, and the reflector comes off. I don't know why they don't just paint it on.
