Well your surveyors wheel will be a good choice if you want to do it that way. However the rollout as others have described is the easiest most accurate that I've seen or have done. And you can easily determine the rolling circumference from the tire which is usually what you are suppose to enter in the calibration.
I'd still hesitate to compare the two devices though. Let us know what you get on each if you do decide to do a rollout.
