Your are right - metro Boston roads
can be crazy. However, we are fortunate to have some pretty good rail trails in our community. The Minuteman Bikeway runs right through Arlington:

I am actually about to layer up and ride the Minuteman out to Bedford Depot Park:

From there I will probably take the Reformatory Branch Trail (hardpack dirt) out to Concord.
