I'm pretty sure Robert Ludlum wrote this plot a decade before John le Carre, substituting a drug cartel boss for an arms dealer. But le Carre was a better writer, while Ludlum's forte was creating good characters and plots -- but he was a terrible writer. Movie adaptations of Ludlum novels are usually better than the books.
