My suspicion is the hot/humid weather plus sweat made his grip on the bars a problem, so when he hit the obstacle his hands fell off the bars and he crashed.
Living in IL I never wore gloves in the summer. Down here I'm generally gloveless in fall and early spring - I have had a few close calls climbing with my hand slipping on the hoods so now I always wear gloves in the summer unless it's a particularly easy ride.
