I think the road will be picking up as these kids mature.
This weekend junior endos after "a great climb" and I have to drive on these epic paved roads (Red Rock, Manitou Springs) to pick him up. He is smashing up his body, having fun doing it. I am looking forward to collegiate MTB nats this Friday in Big Bear. This is not his discipline, actually nothing is these days, but I don't think he is going to loose it on the climbs. Hitting the dirt deck has become a regular thing.
FWIW - he has never crashed in a non junior USAC category road bike race. MTB is different.

I have little control anymore (good) except buying stuff. This is recreation, and he'd rather do cross or ski than do any class - skills or school. He is a road guy. This is less about skill than knowing your limitations and riding to them.
It is interesting to see how cautious and precise he is on on the road vs reckless abandon on the dirt. Maybe how hard the deck is.

Odd comparison, but I'm a vastly better cornerer on the road bike than I am on the mountain bike or cross bike, and I'm one of the more timid dudes on a motorcycle.

I've had a few heart-stopping moments on a road bike when the rear wheel lets loose in a slippery turn or even the front sliding in some slimy gutter. Don't like it. Rode open class 2 stroke mx bikes in the desert for 10 years, so I don't mind sliding a bit in the dirt. I'm timid on the mtb when in high consequence situations, but I like sliding that thing a little, too.

Road I've laid a pedal down on the inside, twice, trying to cheat the corner and apply power early. Both times I lived. Basically hopped me up and over a bit then had to straighten from the slide. Both times people watching "ohhhhhhh shhhhiiiiiii", and then........"yahhhh!!!!". Lol.
In cross? I slide out with a foot down every time I'm on the course, practice or race. Just learned to recover it and lay a foot down. Usually it's when they've mown the grass and the loose grass is on top of the hard-pan dirt in a fast corner. That'll make your butt pucker!

I had a pedal strike actually save me from going down at a crit this summer. I took a corner way too hot trying to save some energy and totally lost traction, and was low siding but out of habit kept pedaling. When the pedal struck the ground it launched my ass into the air and I was able to save it. And then I pulled myself cuz that's the spookiest ****** thing that's happened to me on a bike in a long while.

Back when I raced, the outside edge of my SPD-SL's had been worn down due to pedal strikes. I know I scared the **** out of one person behind me.

So earlier this year I mentioned I wanted to go back to grad school. I started at the end of August and it's ****** rad. It's a 2.5 year program and after it's done I think I want to go to law school. Maybe I'll keep going to school until I'm retirement age or some sort of Mad Max scenario becomes reality and I get to wear assless chaps without fear of arrest.
Anyway yeah, things are great. The no job thing is kinda scary but I think in the long term it'll work itself out.

Looks like I'll be in SD in a few weeks. Work trip has me going to Vegas (ugh) for a few days then on to SD for a few days.
I'm not sure of my schedule yet, but I'll connect with you SD guys later and maybe we can meet up for a beer.

Nerd status to the n'th degree. Just bought a Zwift foot pod. Lol. If this winter I'm running indoors, may as well optimize my membership.
I run slow enough versus a bike that you can sim the slope pretty easy on a treadmill, lol.
Let's see how this goes.

Rahsaan Bahati has a fondo type charity ride in the local mountains. A friend from my club finished 3rd woman. I think she won $100. I thought about going but I might not have been able to finish within the cut-off time.
Rode today with another friend who did the event. He said it was 9500 feet of climbing in the timed section, which was 75 miles. I'm super impressed that my friend ( I always knew she was a great climber ) finished in the top 25% of all riders in a ride full of ex-pros and other racers/climbers. She's 46.
