Driving up to SF for concerts at Winterland was a regular thing in my college years. Long multi-song jams were quite the experience.

Re the smokestack on the road bike, I forgot the steerer tube has a metal insert and a star nut. A good system, but not the most flexible. The nut position would allow me to take off a cm, but otherwise, I'd have to push it down and I'm afraid of breaking the insert free when I tap it. The top of the insert shows signs of having been trimmed previously, too, so it could theoretically end right below the current nut position (bad for the stem clamp). Might just live with it.

If I remember correctly the expander assembly is epoxied in to the steer tube for those bikes.

Most likely and, fortunately, the insurance co. agreed. I don't remember doing anything at all like that since we got the boat in 2007, and the previous owners were manifest idiots. On the other hand, it wasn't noted on the purchase survey, so it's a mystery.
A 17,000 lb boat has a lot of force even at low speed and the glass is pretty thin there, so maybe I just kissed something.

My reading comprehension is poor this morning. I see what you're asking now.
Those sleeves are fairly long, so you might have a decent amount there to work with, but like you said who knows how much has been trimmed off already. Should be reasonably easy to get a feeler gauge through the gaps in the star nut and figure out how low the insert goes.
s far as the risk of pushing the star nut down, the biggest thing I would be afraid of is it pushing the star nut too far and it dropping out the bottom of the sleeve, then it living in your fork crown forever. I'd probably want to use a star nut setter with a depth stop and trim steer tube > push star nut down > trim steer tube > push star nut down. The entire sleeve breaking free would be no big deal IMO so long as it didn't take out any carbon with it.
