The sand pit was actually quite amazing. It was built on top of a concrete slab so the sand didn't really compact, it just displaces. 10' wide, 40' long and 10" deep meant go fast and hold your line.
The stairs were a lot of fun too.
Come to think of it, usually you see "natural" sand pits, not 10" deep sand pits of where they were TRYING to get people to go over the bars. But I have seen stairs used in videos and photos.
That was my favorite race this season. A lot of technical sections with a few straights between them. A lot of climbing and descending too.

Like stairs?
Hey ryand if you like cruel stairs, come check out the mt trashmore race in Va beach VA. They use a really long section of concrete steps that sucks to walk up w/o the bike... And you're in driving distance, 3 hrs from the district.

And the worst part about the stairs at Mt. Trashmore is that they're railed off on either side and quite narrow, so you can't pass anybody on them! You have to get around people before you get to the stairs or you'll be held up all the way to the top.

Rumor has it that there's no stairs this year at Trashmore but you'll still go up the hill shouldering the bike.

That would be good- I don't think it's fair to send the course up a runup that's only one person wide. According to the rules, it has to be three meters (but nobody follows them, of course). I don't mind parts being narrower than that, but I think you still need to have it wide enough for two people to go side by side- that makes for a lot better spectating action!

Wow. And nobody stepped over the tape? It's only a little ways off the ground! By the time everybody was through that, I'll bet the field was strung out for quite a ways.

Actually, I was planning on hitting up Trashmore this weekend. I think we might stay at a hotel 11 miles from the race. Will probably head down Saturday night.

I've got a bunch of photos linked from my blog here. Scroll down to the post about cyclocross photos now online, and click on the title to access my Flickr account.
Most of these were taken at the kmk Cyclocross Series in Marquette, MI (yep, us Yoopers even have 'cross now). One was taken at the Wisconsin Cycling Association race at Angell Park.
A few of my favorites:
