Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

great pic

ridden that trail and nearby trails - and might be one of the few to not see an eagle

sat up on the train trestle for maybe 30 minutes during one recent ride - still nuthin

got rock and roll chain lube - 'gold' and 'holy cow'

tried holy cow on a few bikes

amazing stuff - never used anything like it - really cleans the chain when applied

messy to apply - but not an issue after the chain is wiped and sits / dries

I only ever hear one owl here, the ferruginous pygmy owl. Diurnal and repetitive, to the point it blends into the background noise. Haven't heard it in awhile though. It must go somewhere else for the heavy rain period. And speaking of heavy rain, we got another one last night. We're getting about an inch a day.

Yes, I am still riding with Machka, although not as far as it was annually five years ago. But I am gradually returning to doing more and will hopefully tick over 3,000km this year (don't ask me what that is in miles, because we don't deal with miles in Australia, but getting close to 2,000 I think).

Our bike list hasn't changed at all, so we are still on the various bikes we were five years ago, including our ttitaniums and tourers. I still have a CF bike I am aiming to get to 10,000km total distance by the end of the year after the Hasa titanium gets to 15,000km. Disc brakes are rare among the 20-plus bikes we own, but Machka is keen on the idea of getting electronic shifters in her next bike, whenever that might be.

Strava continues to be our faithful recording system for all rides, and we even connect it with Zwift trainer resullts, although I am not a racer in that (and neither is she), but the TV images are great when using our old-fashioned trainer set-ups. I can even identify some of the spots we ride through because we have really been there in the past.

We are spending this weekend away at our favourite destination, and plan to do a ride up to 100km depending on the weather which is currently rainy. If the rain does persist, we will do a 50km ride tomorrow -- the 50s have been recognised by Audax and we have been doing one a month together for around three years. The 100 would be a breakthrough for me... the longest "50" was really about 73, so I am getting back there. And Machka has shown her incredible ride planning skills that originated in Canada by coming up with excellent routes that even help to minimise the dangers from other road users.

Anyway, I may drop in a bit more often to join the discussions.
Great to hear from you, Rowan!

have you considered a second opinion ?

years ago surgery was recommended for me for a hernia / possible hernia (?)

a second doctor recommended against it - said I was susceptible (in two areas) but did not recommend surgery

fun factoid - the second doctor was an all american basketball player at the university of pittsburgh - #5 all time scorer

and he was just 5-8

When my Dad went in for hernia surgery, he had the nurse who prepped him for surgery tape a note to his belly:
A fellow named Smith, with a hernia
Said to his doctor, "Goldurn ya!
"While fixing my middle,
"Please do not fiddle,
"With matters that do not concern ya!"

another hernia story

one guy in our bike group needed surgery for a hernia - and continued to put it off

he was in discomfort - but put it off for years

eventually he did have the surgery - and after the surgery we observed a more positive disposition ... kinder ... gentler

but we liked the old grumpy guy better !

my LBS’s lube selection has me extremely frustrated lately. I’m gunna have to drive all the way across the bridge tunnel just to get some dry wax, and rock and roll gold.

Why does excel always put things on sale that I need when I don’t have the funds to buy.

Zeta wheels, 250 dollars off. Sigh.

That happens to me, too. Mostly because I always "need" stuff and I never have the funds.

Depressing. I mean I don’t actually need those wheels, I plan on going super team anyways but 500.00 dollars is a lot better than 800.00.

Had a good ride. One of my friends decided to do his 100th century and invited anyone who wanted to join him. The problem is his century started/ended in Dover, Delaware which is a 90 minute drive each way. I cannot justify 3 hours driving for a bike ride, so I rode locally with a handful of guys who also chose to skip the century.

The century ride was super flat, so of course they came in under 5 hours. I do have a sub 5 hour century on my bucket list, but it must wait for another time.

The weather reports have been saying rain all day and possible lightning so I rode around here by myself. No rain but there were some interesting clouds.
A little sun early.

A little higher and it's starting to cloud over.

Looking back, getting a little darker.

On top of the ridge looking over the other side.

Going downhill into that I thought it was going to be wet but just super humid.

Headed back toward home.

The lower part of the descent has been graded so fire trucks can use it if need be, It was more fun when it was all rutted and bumpy but it's faster now.

I tried a bottle of Gold, and found it to be no better than the Tri-Flow I've been using for years. I couldn't find Tri-Flow at the time.
