Just a shakedown ride for a new build on the Harding. Had some tools for routine adjustment = unused (luckily). Determined the chain was too long for crispiest shifting. Not a roadside adjustment for me. Better to have shortened it too long, than to have shortened it too short - I always say.

I headed out east today, over to Greenwich. Before cycling up the hill to the observatory, from where you get one of my favourite views of London, I stop off in the grounds of the Devonport House Hotel at the base of the hill. Much to my surprise not only does the building still exist 50 years later, its still a pet shop, Cally Pets on Caledonian Road, Islington. So I decide I have to go there and get a picture, despite it being over 10 miles away across town.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I opt to go the long way and head out to the Thames Barrier from where I can cycle along the river into central London, from where I can veer up north to Islington. Taxidermy was quite crude back then and very few mounted bird specimens from this period survive, and it is thought to be one of the oldest stuffed birds in existence. Despite being dead for a very long time, this parrot still looks more perky than John Cleese's one. I went up to Three Rivers this morning from here in Visalia, came to a 72.8-mile round trip meandering through the countryside then up past Lake Kaweah. Took the '79 Mercian and was challenged by a couple of hard (but thankfully brief) climbs on the way up into the hills with the 42/28 low gear... Cheers!

Today's ride was all about not doing much of anything. Just wanted to do a shakedown of the Peugeot that I pretty much finished this morning and then take out the new to me old Bianchi just to see how it felt. I did 70 miles yesterday on the Kirk Terraplane despite only planning to do 50. Ran low on carbs on that ride and the last miles hurt. So today I planned on sore legs and just recovering. Legs weren't bad but I got out late and just cruised on the two bikes.

This is how I finally set up the 86 Tourmalet and then rode it today. Smooth and comfortable but I'm spoiled by my other Superbe frictions setups. The stuff on this works but is a big step down from the clearly superior Suntour parts. Oh, but the new Tektro brakes and levers worked very well. Nice to have brakes on this one again.


I do like the choice of brown parts on this.

Then I took out this Bianchi that is still a bit of a mess, too small, and yet quite wonderful feeling under me. The Superbe drivetrain just feels so sexy, works so precise and smoothly and is dang near silent. The brakes.....ummm... yeah....they are none. About to fix that as soon as I finish this post. I got this bike planning to steal the parts for the Peugeot but the bike was too nice once I started cleaning it up.


Ignore the brake hoods, that stuff needs attention still.

So the ride today was pretty much just two trips over the same 9.5 mile route here in Eden. Late start so getting warm and windy and the skies were not as clear as they are earlier in the morning. So no grand scenics from today.

Nice weather today for riding mid 60's so took the Raliegh MT 200 for ride up to Pike National forest on Beaver creek road to do some light trail riding. Between the wet weather and the heavy beaver dam building a lot of the trails and park area were flooded out.

From my home in Berkeley, I headed north along the bay trail toward Point Molate and San Pablo Marina in Richmond, where a cool little BBQ joint called Black Star Pirate BBQ is hidden away. Out & back, it was just under 30 miles. Gorgeous day, albeit rather windy along the water.

The trail passes through a terrific dog park called Point Isabel. Sometimes it's covered in green grass, but not this late in the summer.

Near Point Molate, the East Brother Lighthouse is visible just offshore.


The brick building in the distance is the decommissioned Point Molate Naval Fuel Depot


From there, a short, steep climb with views of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and Mt. Tamalpais in in the distance leads you toward San Pablo Harbor.

Aunt Terry turned 80 on Saturday, so had to ride on Sunday. 64 miles/90 degrees by the finish - cooked. Jerry Ortega sightings = 1

I’ve never seen them run freight on the North Line, but here it is at the Highland Park station. Whole town was abuzz with train chatter.

EDIT: Not freight, it’s an automated ballast laying train. It lays down rock to fill gaps between ties. Had to look it up.

Yesterday Über die Grenze in the Netherlands and a bit of Germany.

80 miles over the course of 8 hours yesterday. First time ever that my legs began to give up on me (cramps, and really, really tired by the last 5 miles) - almost thought I wasn't going to make it home under my own power. Hydrated like crazy, but didn't eat much (too hot!), so that was prolly it. Spend last night recovering; since this was only my 4th ride since the shenanigans on the 11th, I guess it's also true that fitness tapers off quickly when one is off the bike for a decent amount of time.

Rode from Happy Valley Road/67th Avenue out to South Mountain Park because yesterday was the one Silent Sunday during which cars are banned from the summit road for the entire day. Takes about 2.5 hours to get there from my place, so I left around 8 and began the climb by 11:30. Got some good pics, but the battery ran out on the camera about two-thirds of the way to the summit. Oh well, here's some of what I was able to capture with pixels:

Took the Wes Mason to the northern section of central CT to ride with a friend. Lots of beautiful rolling hills and small ponds in this part of the state. While only 31 total miles it was over 2400 ft of climbing:

It started out in the high 80s and got to 102 right around when I arrived at the summit. Since the monsoon season is still ongoing, the rains have kept humidity up there, too. It appears that for the time being, long rides aren't really the best idea - unless one leaves really, really early in the morning.and can get indoors by noon.

I spent at least 2 hours of Sunday's ride just stopping every once in awhile to find shade, drink, lay on my back, and try to recover some sapped energy. By the end I was stopping every 3 miles or so for 15-20 minutes each time. A learning experience

Work and weather have conspired to really limit my riding this month. I even rode the indoor trainer once, a first for me in non winter time. I’m pleased to see everyone getting some really fun rides in. botty kayer Im pleased to say my first thought on looking at your last post’s pictures was “that is an ex-parrot” before reading your text!

Another short ride around town today on the De Rosa before the temps hit the 90’s again.


Crossing the Rivanna Trail. This goes around our entire town, mostly hiking trail, but one section is paved MUT along the Rivanna River. This point is the secret connector trail which wormholes you from the middle of town to edge of town.

UVA football practice facility. They were hard at work behind the fence. First game this Saturday. Apparently this facility is substandard and they are building a new one for $80 million.

Over this past weekend I took my Panasonic Sport Deluxe for 25 and 36 mile round trip rides to the Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park and National Capital Trolley Museum, respectively, getting me up to almost 400 miles ridden on that bike. I love the handling and fit of the bike and it seems to average 16 mph instead of 15 mph on the same routes after overhauling the bottom bracket. I did note some NCTM volunteer had an excellent taste in bikes, riding an 80s Centurion LeMans to the museum.
